Sell it

A friend of mine recently started a very cool job as a coordinator with a foundation which promotes social enterprise. (Social enterprise is a business model which applies commercial theories to social undertakings, essentially making “charities” economically self-sustainable.) As part of her new job, she manages some of the social media content of the foundation’s website, such as writing a blog.

I would love to write a blog as part of my job, particularly in an organization which promotes new ideas and creative thinking. I would amazing at finding content and selling the blog with my passion.

Here’s the thing, though. I don’t need an excuse to sell a concept. My blog is my platform and I can use it more proactively, more consciously, to sell myself.

I know this is not a new idea, but it is not one I had seriously considered in the past. To me, a blog was a guilty pleasure, a vanity platform in which to indulge, and a not-so-secret diary penned by an alter ego. Something to hide in the folds of the Internet and hope my boss didn’t catch wind of.

Certainly not a tool to be consciously used to create one’s reputation.

This makes me extremely angry

This.

Another prostitute (another aboriginal prostitute, I might add) showed up dead in the Edmonton area. How many more before the killer(s) are seriously sought out and found?

In Port Coquitlam, the answer was forty-nine. Four-nine. Forty-nine women wound up dead at the hands of Robert Pickton before he was arrested, despite rumors of freezers filled with human flesh.

Project KARE was established in 2003 following investigations into the Edmonton-area murders of five high-risk women (read: “prostitutes”). Since then, this website has compiled news releases regarding at least 12 other murders in the Edmonton area and 3 high-risk missing persons. It notes over 30 unsolved cases dating back to 1983 (confirmed here).

Project KARE has made one arrest to date, Thomas Svekla, accused of the murders of Rachel Quinney and Theresa Innes and suspected in at least 10 other cases. But the police insist there’s another serial killer out there and have gone so far as to release a profile.

However, there have been no arrests to date.

And that is a crying shame.

Edmonton, sometimes you delight me

A perogy bar? Cotton candy? Fabulous outfits and well-dressed men galore? Look no further than the AGA’s Refinery Late Night Art Party, held last Saturday, March 24. Undeniably the hottest ticket in town, this hipster formal was nothing short of awesome. (And I am pictureless, alas).

…Of the Living Dead

Did I mention I’m doing a presentation on the phenomenon known as the zombie apocalypse? Well, I am. And, unfortunately, my presentation is riddled with typos – one typo in particular, actually. Every time I type “Night of the Living Dead”, I miss the “e”, leaving me with “Night of the Living Dad.”

LIVING DADS ARE FUCKING TERRIFYING, I TELL YOU.

Need sleep.

This is how it shall be

Mark your calendars, folks.  (I did.  I even cancelled previous plans, as you can see.)

It was filled with stars like we were filled with beers

Song of the Week: Shotgun Jimmie – Late Last Year

Why, David, why?

You may or may not be aware that I am completely in love with David Duchovny. But seriously. You will not understand the depth of my love until you watch this fucking amazing video.

Thanks to LLB2B for this amazing birthday present. Hilariously, this video may even be more special to her than me, as it resides at the intersection of Pam Andersen, Buffy and X-files, three of her favourite things.

Happy Birthday to all Pisces!
